Credential Requests

Media credentials will provide access to a media hospitality center located at the Renaissance Harborplace Baltimore Hotel. The media center will include snacks and beverages, phones, free Wi-Fi access and laptop computers for those needing to file stories from the field. The media center will serve as the location for on-site credential pick up, as well as the on-site central location for all event information, daily schedule updates and access to the ships.

Even with a credential, the ships strongly urge you to pre-arrange any interview and/or tour requests as they will also be serving the general public and want to ensure you are given adequate time to get the information and access you need. Credentials do not provide access to any private receptions held on board the vessels as they are by invitation only.

Media Opportunities*

We ask that you please identify the events you are interested in attending, as well as any special requests for interviews or other advance needs (i.e. photos, footage, special access, etc.). Check all that apply. Please note that select events have limited attendance capacity and that a credential request does not guarantee access. Sailabration event coordinators will contact you in advance to confirm attendance and access for each event.

Rear Admiral Earl. L. Gay Interview Opportunity – June 11 – 12. Take advantage of a rare one-on-one interview with Rear Admiral Earl L. Gay, commander, Navy Recruiting Command. Gay commanded the USS Belleau Wood (LHA 3) from March 2003 until November 2004, deploying twice with the 11th MEU in combat support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Following this tour, Gay was assigned as the Navy's Director of Congressional liaison, U.S. House of Representatives. Throughout his career, Gay served also as the 86th commandant of Naval District Washington and deputy commander, Joint Force Headquarters, National Capital Region, the deputy chairman of the Armed Forces Inauguration Committee, Washington, D.C., from July 2008 until March 2009 and as commander, Expeditionary Strike Group 3, San Diego, from July 2009 until June 2011. Pre-scheduled interviews with Rear Admiral Gay only.

Ship Arrival – June 13, all day event. More than three dozen U.S. and foreign naval vessels and tall ships will sail into Baltimore’s Inner Harbor to launch the commemoration of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812.

Embark the USS San Antonio – June 13, 10:30 a.m. Take a Navy helicopter ride from Martin State Airport and land on the USS San Antonio, the lead ship of her class of amphibious transport dock or landing platform dock, which was designed to deliver up to 800 Marines ashore by landing craft or helicopters. Tour the ship and interview the ship’s captain and crew before docking at North Locust Point. Once docked, you will be shuttled back to your vehicle at Martin State Airport. Note that this experience is at least an eight-hour commitment.

Tour a Naval Vessel – June 14, 8 – 8:45 a.m. Get full access of a U.S. naval vessel and interview the ship's captain and crew.

Blue Angels Media Opportunities – June 14, 9:30 a.m. Pre-schedule an interview with Blue Angel pilots and crew to take place at Martin State Airport

Sailabration Welcome Ceremony – June 14, 11:00 a.m. Join Baltimore City Mayor, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Navy captains, and other officials to formally kick-off Star-Spangled 200, the Bicentennial of the War of 1812. Interviews may be available upon request.

Star-Spangled Aircraft Display and Festival - Saturday, June 16, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. View military aircrafts up close at Martin State Airport, including FA-18’s an E-2c Hawkeye, a MH-53 Sea Stallion helicopter and an A-10 Thunderbolt, and interview military personnel.

Blue Angels Air Show – June 16, 1 – 4:00 p.m. Attend the Blue Angels air show from Fort McHenry, the grounds of Harbor Hospital or Port Covington. Photographs and video footage are permitted.

Celebration of the American Flag Event – June 16, 6 – 9:30 p.m. Join Baltimore residents and visitors alike to celebrate the “Stars and Stripes” at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine. The celebration includes fireworks and live music.

Star-Spangled Aircraft Display and Festival - Sunday, June 17, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. View military aircrafts up close at Martin State Airport, including FA-18’s an E-2c Hawkeye, a MH-53 Sea Stallion helicopter and an A-10 Thunderbolt, and interview military personnel.

Star-Spangled Symphony – Sunday, June 17, 7- 8:30 p.m. The 90-minute musical celebration includes the world premiere of Overture for 2012, composed by Philip Glass and performed by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra under the direction of music director Marin Alsop. Interviews with Governor Martin O’Malley and Marin Alsop may be available upon request. Media attendance to, and coverage of, the event are limited.

Parade of Sail – June 19 (Time TBD). Experience the Parade of Sail and watch the ships depart from a non-land-based viewing location (ship in the Inner Harbor) or from a site at Fort McHenry.

200th Anniversary Ceremony: From Enemies to Allies – June 18, 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m @ Fort McHenry; On June 18, 1812, President Madison signed the declaration of war on Great Britain. The ceremony, From Enemies to Allies, will launch the international bicentennial commemoration. President Obama and Prime Ministers Cameron and Harper will deliver recorded video messages. Ambassadors Westmacott and Doer will deliver remarks. The Secretary of the U.S. Navy, the Royal Sea Lord, the Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy and many other dignitaries will attend.

Possible Story Angles

Following is a sampling of potential story ideas to consider. Please identify any of the below if interested and we will assist in coordinating necessary interviews, photographs, footage, etc.

Often called “The Forgotten War,” explore what the State of Maryland is doing to ensure the War of 1812 becomes top of mind with the American public over the next three years. Star-Spangled Sailabration is just the beginning – Commemorative Coins, 15-star, 15 stripe flags, special exhibitions, academic conference at the Naval Academy, Chesapeake Campaign, Red, White and Brew festivals, and other events that are planned for 2013 and 2014.

Get an insider’s view of how the Star-Spangled Sailabration, and any other event of this magnitude, impacts Baltimore tourism.

A detailed look into “The Star-Spangled Banner” from background on its author, Francis Scott Key to exploration of its path to becoming our national anthem. We have historians, leading musicology experts and the original manuscript all at our fingertips in Baltimore.

Profile Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, inspiration for “The Star-Spangled Banner” – Ever since Francis Scott Key looked across the waters toward Fort McHenry and set his eyes on the American flag that was raised announcing the U.S. victory in the Battle of Baltimore, the nation has been inspired by Key’s inspirational poem reminding us all of that fateful day 200 years ago. Visual, hands-on opportunities at the Fort include options for cannon firing, flag raising ceremony and interaction with period re-enactors.

A look into the world of Mary Pickersgill, maker of the flag that flew over Fort McHenry. Visuals could include a tour of her home, now a museum, and interviews with a Mary re-enactor.

Experience a day in the life of a domestic and/or foreign sailor – Get a bird’s eye view of a sailor’s city exploration and impact on local cities and ports, as well as and foreign sailors first-hand experience of local cultures and customs, including sharing their own.

The U.S. Navy first demonstrated itself as a force to be reckoned with during the War of 1812. This bicentennial presents an opportunity to reflect upon how, in 1812, the Navy proved that keeping the sea free was essential to protecting our nation’s economy, way of life and independence. Two hundred years later, the U.S. Navy must be ready every day to protect our national security, our free flow of international commerce, and ensure free passage on the sea.

Experience the premiere of new symphonic work. Learn why this commemoration has inspired the writing of a new piece of music, jointly commissioned by the State of Maryland and the City of Toronto to mark their historic ties and more than 200 years of peace. Pre-arranged interviews with music directors from the Baltimore and Toronto Symphony Orchestras are available.
